Tying the knot- lit unity candle

Some people say that the origin of unity candles is at least 30-40 years old, some think it started back in 1930s however the exact history of unity candles is still unknown. However the use of unity candles on the weddings have become wide-spread, it is still prohibited in many churches for example it is not part of the Catholic wedding ceremony.

Lilting unity candles is most popular in the United States, then in any other part of the world. The unity candle lilting is a simple ceremony that uses two taper candles with a large pillar candle in the center, this pillar candle is actually known as unity candle. This ceremony takes place at the beginning of the wedding ceremony, a representative from each family light the two taper candles usually the mothers of the bride and the groom do the proceedings. After that the usual wedding ceremony proceeds and the bride and the groom take those usual vows, when done with that both lit the pillar candle or the unity candle from the two taper candles.

The unity candle is decorated with the wedding invitation or an inscription, sometimes a picture of the couple, or any other decorative to make the candle table look nice. The candles used are usually white in color, this color is selected as it represents purity, innocence and peace.. Some couples like a nice music to be played at the back ground while they are liting the candles, on the other hand some just like it to be plain simple. Some couples keep all the decoratives on the unity candle table with them for the rest of their lives as good memories. However some couples also keep the candle with them to lit on their anniversaries.

The unity candles is said to pay homage to the unity of two souls and two families. Those who believe in this ritual follow it by heart. In some ceremonies the bride and the groom blew of the tapper candles, this symbolize that the two souls have merged. However of the taper candles are left lit, that means that the two will continue to love their families and are going to have their own individualites. Liting unity candles is new tradition thus it totally depends on the couple, if they feel comfortable they make it a part of their wedding. Unity candles however are the promise of a long term relationship.
