Wedding is the time when two souls come together to spend the rest of their lives with each other. Wedding is the most awaited occasion of ones life, a girl from her teenage waits for her wedding when she can live happily ever after with her prince charming. But however contemporary we are in our culture, we can never deny the importance of families of the bride and groom in the wedding. For happy and prosperous life it is very important that the two families get to interact with each other and understand each other. Wedding is not only the occasion for a bride or the groom but also for the families of two.
Keeping in mind the importance of families in the wedding ceremony a new tradition was introduced in 20th century and this tradition is known as the lighting of unity candle. Unity candle, as the name suggests is a symbolic tradition to honor the two families and let them know that it is because of them that the two souls are going to mate. The unity candle ceremonial takes place before the bride and the groom take vows. There are total of three candles already placed on the unity candle table, the two small candles known as the taper candles and the pillar candle known as the unity candle. The mothers of the bride and the groom first light the taper candles and then the bride and the groom light the pillar candles using the taper candles. In this was they symbolize that not only the two souls are coming together but the two families. There is also an extension of the same ritual, if the bride and the groom blow the taper candles that mean the two are now one and going to live for each other for good. However if they do not blow the taper candles then that would mean both would continue with their individualities in life.
